Biography Monique van Oers

Monique van Oers, born in The Netherlands in 1966, has held the position of Director of the Legal Department of the Netherlands Competition Authority since 2004. From 1999 to 2004 she held a management position in the Competition Unit of the same Department. Prior to working at the Netherlands Competition Authority, she was a legal consultant in the field of antitrust law to the Panamanian Competition Authority (Comisión de Libre Competencia y Asuntos del Consumidor; Republic of Panama; 1997 – 1999), and attorney specialising in national and European competition law with the international law firm of De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek at their offices in Brussels and The Hague (1990 – 1997). She was admitted to the Dutch bar in 1990.
Ms. Van Oers studied in Brussels, Belgium where she obtained an LL.M. in International and Comparative Law and graduated magna cum laude in 1989. She obtained her law degree from the University of Maastricht in 1988 where she graduated cum laude. During her legal studies she was also a teaching and research assistant to the European and international law department of the law faculty.
Ms. Van Oers has published various articles on legal topics, mainly in the field of competition law. She regularly gives presentations and has also been a lecturer in the course “Business and the European Community: an Overview of Obstacles to Intra-Community Trade and Investment”: (a course for undergraduate students from the United States during their traineeship at the European Parliament) and other post-graduate courses on (European) competition law.
