Biography Gerald FitzGerald

Gerald FitzGerald was appointed Member of the Competition Authority with effect from 7 July 2010 and is Director of the Authority’s Cartels Division and Mergers Division.

Before joining the Authority, Mr FitzGerald was a Consultant with McCann FitzGerald solicitors where he had been a partner for some 30 years. He established the firm’s Brussels office in the 1970s and was head of its Competition, Regulated Markets and EU law practice group for many years.

He was a member of the Government-appointed Competition and Mergers Review Group (1997-2002) which published five reports on the reform of Irish competition law and whose recommendations were incorporated in the Competition Act 2002.

He was a member of the Competition Authority’s Advisory Panel from 2002 until 2006. He was a founder member and past Chair of the Irish Society for European Law and is a Director and Secretary of the Irish Centre for European Law at Trinity College, Dublin. He is Chair of the Law Council at NUI Maynooth. He is a member of the International Bar Association and an Associate of the American Bar Association. He is the author and co-author of numerous publications on competition law topics.
